Kirina Lolow is a traditional Malian music band formed in 2022 featuring vocalist and composer Assetou Sissoko.

Debut album Lagare Setou, was released on January 2023 on all music platforms. Conceived in Mali, recorded in Ghana and Morocco and mixed in Spain, it features 5 songs in the purest tradition of the mandinga music where the kora, balafon, talking drum and calabash lay down a steady and calm foundation for the vocal performance.

The band has been performing locally since March 2022 and was invited to perform in Tamale Ghana in July 2022, and then traveled to Southern Morocco to participate to the Zamane festival in M’Hamid el Ghizlane.

BIO

Kirina Lolow grew out of Playing For Change Foundation’s Ecole de Musique de Kirina in Mali, a music school dedicated to the transmission of the Malian cultural heritage. The school features 4 members of the school who have formed the band with amazing young vocalist Assetou Sissoko.

On the calabash, Mahamadou Diabaté is the descendant of the 70th generation of musicians in his family, brother of worldclass kora player Toumani Diabate and son of the great Sidiki Diabate.

Mahamadou has been the director of Ecole de Musique de Kirina since 2010. Nfaly Kouyaté, originally from Bamako teaches kora at Ecole de Musique de Kirina, where Boubacar Gouem, the other kora player in the band has been initiated to the instruments for a decade. Adama Diabate plays the malinke balafon, and masters the tama as well as other percussion instruments. Assetou Sissoko aka “Lagare Setou” has learned music from a very young age directly from her grandmother who discovered and cultivated her talent during years.

In July 2022, the band was invited to perform in Tamale, Ghana, home of the Bizung School of Music and Dance, created by Playing For Change Foundation. This is where the first recordings of the album Lagare Setou started. A few months later, the band traveled to the south of Morocco and performed at the Zamane Festival, organized by Joudour Sahara in M’Hamid el Ghizlane and recorded 3 addtional al songs that are featured on this very first album.
